What is asbestos sampling?

Visual inspection alone cannot confirm whether asbestos is present.

Many building materials look alike. Laboratory analysis is required to determine whether a particular material contains asbestos. Our sampling visit is designed for customers who already have one or more specific materials they want tested.

Ideal for a specific suspect material

This service suits homeowners who have found a textured coating, cement sheet, floor tile or other building material and want a clear answer before maintenance, renovation, purchase or sale.

When sampling may help

Get clarity before disturbing a suspect material.

Sampling is useful where a particular material has been identified and confirmation is needed.

Before DIY or renovation

Confirm a material before drilling, sanding, scraping or removing it.

Buying or selling

Obtain greater certainty about a material raised during a viewing or inspection.

Damaged materials

Understand whether a damaged material contains asbestos before deciding what to do next.

After a visual assessment

Confirm a material previously recorded as suspected rather than laboratory-confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about asbestos sampling

Does the £180 include laboratory testing?

Yes. The starting price includes the visit, one sample and laboratory analysis. A travel charge may apply depending on the service address.

How much are additional samples?

Each additional sample is £30 including VAT and laboratory analysis.

Can I send you a sample by post?

Yes. If a sample has already been safely collected by you or by a professional, we can arrange laboratory analysis for £95 including VAT. Results are typically provided within 3 working days of receiving the sample. Contact us before posting it so we can provide the correct submission instructions.

Can asbestos be confirmed by looking at a material?

No. Appearance can make a material suspect, but laboratory analysis is required to confirm whether asbestos is present.

Is this the same as a full asbestos survey?

No. A sampling visit tests specific materials. It is not a complete inspection of the property and should not be treated as an asbestos survey.

How quickly will I receive my results?

Laboratory results are typically provided within 3 working days from the sample being taken. If there is an unexpected delay, we will keep you informed.

What if the material cannot be safely sampled?

Sampling is undertaken only where it is safe and appropriate. We will explain the next suitable step if sampling cannot proceed.
